"We belong in a bundle of life. We say, "a person is a person through other people." It is not "I think therefore I am" [but rather] "I am human because I belong" I participate, I share." I can connect to this by the mere fact that I am human. I feel this idea comes from the fact that we are all human and we each belong to a certain group. Right now I am part of the group from the colloquium class in which we all share on this blog. Tonight I might be part of the group who lives in my apartment. Tomorrow I will belong to the group of nursing students in pharmacology. No matter who you are, you belong to a certain group of people by connections you all share. We are all in a bundle of life as the quote above shares and this bundle can be from all different directions and groups.
At Bahia Vista, in Karen's Cooking Class I am can connect to this quote above because again, I am part of the group at the cooking class. We are all connected just by being at the same place for the same reason, we are all there to learn and to cook and eat. We are people through each other and through the ideas and meaning we share together. As we participate all together in the cooking class or gardening we are sharing ideas, sharing personalities, and forming to be with one another.
One gift I noticed in the South Africa, From problem to place was the picture showed on pg. 85 it is of "neighborhood children come to Lapeng to play in the park. The creative inner city initiative invites inner city youth to express themselves through art and music" (pg. 85). This gift among the community is the idea that they are connected through the park and it is an area where these kids can express themselves. They are sharing and participating and as in the quote above, they are people through other people and in this circumstance they are people belonging to the same youth program. One gift that I found in Zimbabwe, from efficiency to resilience was Kufundees journey of celebration. "This visit in particular will be a celebration, as the Kufundees are bringing you along, and any occasion to fete a foreigner is good enough reason to throw a pungwe, an all-night party where even the grannies dance til dawn" (pg. 116). I found this to be a very positive area of the community in Zimbabwe because it brings them all together and gives that meaningful connection. They are able to share and participate and become people as they belong to a group with a common interest.
