"I believe that in our culture of simulation, the notion of
authenticity is for us what sex was for the Victorian -- threat and
obsession, taboo and fascination"
I believe that he means we as a culture now see simulation as the next "it" thing, it fascinates us, it drives us, it also scares us, because once we get into it we might not get back out. That is where we are taking technology, into a world that will simulate intimacy and relation ships with machines just like the relationships we can get with human interaction . Just like sex was once an OOH factor in the Victorian era it. through his text you can see this is what he talks about Miriam who enjoys the company of her Japanese robot baby seal, it recreates human life, this shows our fascination with the new technology. the next part where a daughter is talking to her mother who is in an other place over skype is the part that we are afraid of, we are there with each other but we can be doing other things, we arent fully there or aware of everything unlike that of a face to face interaction. and in the last part we can see we are moving in to this new technology but we dont know if its god or not or if we can now get out, he talks about how we are textings instead of talking, and how our texting is getting abbreviation and getting simpler and faster and more communication, and how we are getting less and less involved in it and can be doing other things while we text.
